Near the beginning of this book Anderson had me laughing out loud. That light mood wasn't to last but it was replaced with a very keen sense of place, one I realized I was hungry for since first immersing myself in the desert places and people of Tony Hillerman's books. I don't at all mind that Anderson's territory and to some extent, characters and Hillerman's overlap, even though they are very different writers. They both have a deft hand at loneliness and those who wear it like a badge of self-imposed or well-tolerated destiny.

About the author
JAMES ANDERSON grew up in the Pacific Northwest. He is a graduate of Reed College, and received his MFA in creative writing from Pine Manor College. His short fiction, poetry, essays, and reviews have appeared in many magazines, and he previously served as the publisher and editor-in-chief of Breitenbush Books. The Never-Open Desert Diner is his first novel.
