भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम में अपने असाधारण योगदान के लिए पं. गोविंद बल्लभ पंत को नाकुमाऊँ का चीता' (कुमाऊँ का बाघ) कहा जाता है। उन्होंने कुमाऊँ के सर्वांगीण विकास में महत्त्वपूर्ण योगदान दिया। उनके पूर्वजों को महाराष्ट्र में सम्मानित किया गया था। जब गोविंद के दादाजी बदरीनाथ की तीर्थयात्रा पर थे, तो अल्मोड़ा के शासक उनकी विद्वत्ता से बहुत प्रभावित हुए थे और उनके अनुरोध पर वह बँट' नामक एक जगह पर बस गए। संपूर्ण कुमाऊँ क्षेत्र उनके उच्च नैतिकतापूर्ण और महान् आचरण से काफी प्रभावित था।
गोविंद बल्लभ पंत का जन्म 10 दिसंबर, 1887 को खुट गाँव में अल्मोड़ा के पास श्याही देवी पहाड़ी की ढलानों पर हुआ था। उनकी माँ का नाम गोविंदी बाई था। उनके पिता मनोरथ पंत राजस्व विभाग में कार्यरत थे और अकसर उन्हें काम के संबंध में यात्रा करनी पड़ती थी, जिसके कारण गोविंद का बचपन अपने दादा राय बहादुर बद्रीप्रसाद जोशी के साथ बीता। वह अपने दादा के व्यक्तित्व से बहुत प्रभावित थे। बच्चे के रूप में उन्होंने, उन्हें राज्य के मामलों में बात करते सुना और उन्हें समझने और उन्हें आत्मसात् करने की कोशिश की। उन्होंने अपने दादा के विचारों पर ध्यान दिया और उन्हें अपने पूरे जीवन में अपनाया।
