Any day that I get my hands on a new Christine Pope book is bound to be a good day. And a new book in her Witches of Cleopatra Hill makes it even better. I really love this series about modern day witches. It’s got great characters and it’s loads of fun. Defender, her newest book, is no exception. Jack Sandoval is a member of the De La Paz clan in southern Arizona. His talent is defensive magic, which comes in handy as he’s a detective in the Scottsdale police department. His job is both to solve crimes but also to make sure anything “witchy” gets swept under the table, something the witch clans depend on. One night he gets called in to work on a particularly gruesome case that has magical ritual written all over it, complete with magic symbols written on the wall with the victim’s blood. There he meets Kate Campbell and his world is changed forever. Kate is unwittingly involved when she shows up to serve her husband divorce papers and finds his body instead. She also has a secret: her brother is married to a witch in the McAllister clan. Jack realizes this early on and, when Kate also becomes a target, he does everything in his power to keep her safe from the crazed murderer on the loose. What he hadn’t counted on was losing his heart to Kate. This is a very entertaining read. It could be read as a stand-alone book but it would be much more enjoyable if at least Impractical Magic, the book featuring Kate’s brother Colin, was read first. After that you’ll be pulled into this world of modern day witches. Enjoy the ride!

Kate Campbell has managed to remove herself from her wreck of a marriage. She just needs to get her soon to be ex to sign on the dotted line. But when she turns up at the appointed time she finds her husband has been mutilated! Jack Sandoval is a warlock in the La Paz clan. They hind in plain sight rather then in little enclaves like the McAllisters and Wilcoxes. He gets assigned the murder and meets Kate at the crime scene. He realises that the murder has bee But as the tension mounts, he realises that Kate has become a target herself and he takes her into hiding. Kate and Jack realise that her tenuous link to the McAllister Clan maybe why she is being targeted and they take steps to ensure her safety but not before terror strikes close to Jack's clan. But Kate feels torn, she should be mourning her husband. shouldn't she? Yes they were getting divorced but surely she can't be lusting after the hot detective when her husband is so freshly murdered? This will keep you on your toes! Just when you think you have it sussed, more twists wreck your solution! Kate is brilliantly portrays the torn, distressed female and feels so terrible lusting after Jack. Jack is tall, dark and oh so Alpha! He knows that Kate is his, he just has to get her to see that, even though the timing sucks! Brilliant read!
