About this ebook

Loneliness is a cold companion, but the truth could freeze her heart.

If Sarah Wright didn’t know better, she could swear she’s being watched. But that’s impossible. After a mysterious fever turned everyone else in Cloudcroft, New Mexico, to ash, she has never been more alone.

As winter sets in, all she can do is focus on gathering enough firewood to survive…or enough courage to find out if she’s truly the last woman on earth. She never thought the last man on earth would knock on her door.

Given the chance to save one life from the Djinn’s deadly plan to claim Earth as their own, Kamal al-Sayid has been observing his choice — Sarah. He never expected her desperate loneliness to ensnare his heart, or her warm lips to tempt his desire. But disclosing too soon the brutal truth of what his people did to hers is not the way to win her trust.

He forgot that snowdrifts aren’t the only things that pose a danger on the mountain. And the only way to save her is reveal the extent of his magic…and trust that love will light her way to the safety of his arms.

Christine Pope’s new novella, Illuminated, closes the Djinn War series. It’s little jewel of a novella, set in the time after the Dying, the catastrophe set in motion by the Djinn in so that they can reclaim Earth as their own. I suppose it’s possible to read this separate from the others but one should probably at least read the first three books in the series to understand more of the story line. I must confess that I don’t normally enjoy novellas or short stories. If I like the plot I want to read a whole book about it. But this novella is fun, partly because it’s set at Christmas. Sarah Wright is the only person in her town of Cloudcraft to survive the dying. As winter closes in she knows that she should get down off the mountain before she’s snowed in for the winter. But, somehow, she just can’t make herself to abandon her town and the hotel where she now lives. Then one day Cam shows up. “Cam” is really Kamal al-Sayid, a Djinn. He has Chosen Sarah to be his life partner but wants to make sure she is the right person for him. Thus, he enters her life as human, wanting to get to know her further until he reveals himself as a Djinn, one who’s species had eradicated the vast majority of the people in the world. So, while I don’t normally like novellas, this one was fun for both the Christmas theme and also for being one last taste of a world I have come to love. As a matter of fact, I think I’ll go back to the first book of the series right now and dive in. Happy reading!
